Dr. Benza grew up in Cincinnati, attended Moeller High School, and went on to the University of Cincinnati where he received a Bachelor of Science in Biology. After his undergraduate studies, he attended the medical school at the University of Cincinnati, graduating in 1990. His internship was at Kettering Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio (1990-1991) and then returned to complete an Ophthalmology Residency at University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Cincinnati, Ohio 1994.

Dr. Benza is advanced in outpatient Cataract surgery without the need for stitches and provides custom cataract treatment using Toric, Restor, and Pan Optix lenses, designed to treat cataract and to correct Presbyopia. Dr. Benza performs surgery at two locations, TriHealth Evendale Hospital and CVP Surgery Center, IvyPointe. Dr. Benza also diagnoses and treats numerous eye disorders, including Diabetic Retinopathy, Glaucoma, Cataracts, Dry Eye, Macular Degeneration and external eye diseases involving the lids, cornea and conjunctiva. He currently practices in a new, state of the art facility in the heart of Montgomery.

Dr. Benza has an extensive background in clinical research including over 30 trials as a principal investigator, assisting in the development of many medications currently used all over the world in treatment of glaucoma, dry eye, blepharitis and anti-inflammatories used following cataract surgery. He has been a leader in the local community as one of the founders of Apex Eye in 1996 (president for 14 years) and went on to help develop, build and expand Evendale Hospital prior to its acquisition by Trihealth in 2012.

Dr. Benza has been voted by his physician peers as a top doctor in Cincinnati Magazine every year from 2009 to 2020., Dr. Benza is board certified with the American Board of Ophthalmology and is affiliated with the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons, Ohio State Medical Association, and Academy of Medicine of Cincinnati.
